𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬 is a type of roundworm that uses raccoons as part of its lifecycle. These roundworms are specifically studied because they produce 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬 in species other than raccoons, which is what we’re going to talk about today!

𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐚 is a malformation of the 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐦, the part of the brain that controls coordination and movement. In this condition, the cerebellum is underdeveloped and smaller than it should be!

The 𝐲𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 is a common weed that likes to grow in dry summer pastures. In some cases, this plant may be the only green thing left for animals to eat in the pasture!

𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 are rare tumours that arise from remnants of the 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝, which are primitive cells leftover from embryonic development. These tumours tend to grow in the tail region in most species.

𝐅𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 is when a piece of 𝐟𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 (the main component of the discs between our spinal vertebrae) breaks off and enters the blood stream. From there, it forms an 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐬, or a foreign material in the blood, which can block blood flow.

BSE is a disease of 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, which are small proteins found primarily in nervous tissue. The exact function of these little proteins is unknown, however they can have big effects when they are 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐝 (change in shape).

The 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 are all viruses of the Togoviridae family, and they all cause inflammation in the brain. There are three viruses we think of in this group, Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE), Western equine encephalitis virus (WEE) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEE).

𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 is a viral disease caused by a 𝐋𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬, which are viruses typically found in bats. Current evidence suggests that rabies virus developed initially in vampire bats, and later became adapted to carnivores.

𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐧𝐢 is a bacterial disease of cattle that can cause a wide range of lesions throughout the body! Its primary role is as a respiratory pathogen, however.

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐲𝐥𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐬 is a parasite that primarily affects deer, but can accidentally infect other species as well. It is primarily known for invading into the 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬, the connective tissue protecting the brain.
