In particular, this disease causes several skeletal abnormalities that give the lambs the appearance of a long-legged spider.

๐‚๐จ๐œ๐œ๐ข๐๐ข๐š๐ง๐ฌ are a type of protozoan that live within cells. The most common coccidians we think about are ๐„๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐š and ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐š in our production animal species. These parasites have a ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ for intestinal cells, meaning they specifically seek out that location to live!

There are two basic forms, ๐š๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, where the body is delivered a large amount of copper over a short period of time, and ๐œ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, where there are consistently high levels of copper, but not enough to induce acute toxicity.

This is also associated with failure of the abdominal wall to close, so the guts are hanging out of the fetus. This gives the fetus an โ€œinside outโ€ appearance. So weird.

We typically shorten this disease to just โ€œpolioโ€, for obvious reasons. But if you break it down into its Latin roots, itโ€™s not too bad!
