𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐛 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞 is a type of 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐚, or irregular development of cartilage. In particular, this disease causes several skeletal abnormalities that give the lambs the appearance of a long-legged spider.

𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 are a type of protozoan that live within cells. The most common coccidians we think about are 𝐄𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 and 𝐈𝐬𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚 in our production animal species. These parasites have a 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐦 for intestinal cells, meaning they specifically seek out that location to live!

𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 are the larvae of the sheep bot fly, which happen to enjoy living in the nose of sheep! The larvae living in the nose can be very annoying for the sheep, but generally do not cause too many issues.

𝐄𝐧𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫 is a form of 𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐚 (tumour of the glandular tissue of the nose) that is caused by a viral infection.

𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 is the presence of a single, large eye, like a cyclops from Greek mythology. This is a problem that develops during development of the fetus, and is often associated with other 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 (present at birth) abnormalities.

𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 is essentially what it sounds like, having too much copper in the body. There are two basic forms, 𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲, where the body is delivered a large amount of copper over a short period of time, and 𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲, where there are consistently high levels of copper, but not enough to induce acute toxicity.

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐮𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐬 is a rare and fatal congenital disease where the fetus’ spine is 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐝 backward, meaning that spine is curved away from the legs. This is also associated with failure of the abdominal wall to close, so the guts are hanging out of the fetus. This gives the fetus an “inside out” appearance. So weird.

We typically shorten this disease to just “polio”, for obvious reasons. But if you break it down into its Latin roots, it’s not too bad!
