𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 is a parasitic disease caused by a roundworm called 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬. These worms like to live in the heart (hence the name of the disease) and in the 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 (major vessel going from the heart to the lungs), and can get up to 30cm long!

𝐂𝐫𝐲𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦 is the most common disorder of sexual development in male animals. During development, the testicles are located near the kidneys, and as the animal develops, they are pulled downwards into the scrotum, their normal home. In cryptorchidism, one or both of the testicles doesn’t reach its final destination, and ends up somewhere in the abdomen!

𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 are the larvae of the sheep bot fly, which happen to enjoy living in the nose of sheep! The larvae living in the nose can be very annoying for the sheep, but generally do not cause too many issues.

𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 literally means crooked joint, which is a pretty accurate description of this disease! In this condition, an animal is born with joints that cannot straighten, and occasionally entire limbs that cannot straighten.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐬 in general are when the intestine becomes displaced through a hole it’s not supposed to go through. These can occur in many different locations! Today we’re going to talk about 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐬 specifically, which is where the intestines become displaced through a hole in the diaphragm.

𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 refers to inflammation of the pancreas, and can be 𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞 (sudden onset) or 𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 (low levels of inflammation over a long period).

𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 is a disease of the skeleton in growing animals, that results in abnormal formation of bone at the growth plates, as well as poor quality bone in general.

𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐚 𝐥𝐮𝐩𝐢 is a type of 𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐞 (round worm) that invades into the esophagus, forming a 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚, a round nodule of inflammation.

𝐑𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢 is a bacteria that is commonly found in the soil and in horse manure. It is considered a 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 pathogen, meaning it needs to invade into host cells in order to survive.

𝐃𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐬 are areas on the 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐚 (front surface of the eye) or 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚 (soft tissue surrounding the eye) that developed improperly. Instead of forming normal ocular tissue, the area has developed into skin-like tissue! These areas can include everything from hair to sweat glands to even bone and cartilage.
