𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐞 is more scientifically known as 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬, and is a viral infection affecting the upper respiratory tract. As the name might suggest, affected cattle often have a 𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 (red) nose!

𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐤𝐞𝐬 are a 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐞 (fluke) found in 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐬 (deer, moose, elk) in North America. These parasites are typically found in the liver of affected animals, hence the name.

𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐱 is a bacterial disease that causes severe 𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 (inflammation of the lymphatic vessels) and 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚 (blood infection), and has a high mortality rate.

𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐞𝐠 is a form of 𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐲𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 (muscle infection causing death of tissue) caused by bacterial infection. This disease is typically characterized by “bubbles” in the muscle, from the bacteria producing gas.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐳𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐬 are a specific type of gastrointestinal foreign body, caused by animals ingesting large amounts of hair. This hair clumps together in the moist environment of the gastrointestinal tract, and forms what we think of as a hairball!

𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬 is a condition caused by the larvae of flies migrating in the skin. Once in the skin, these larvae form a nodule with a hole to the external skin surface to allow them to breathe. Gross.

𝐄𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐦 is a disease caused by ingesting fungus-infested grain, and is the oldest known 𝐦𝐲𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 (toxicity produced by fungi). In fact, ergot toxicity may have been the underlying “cause” of the witches identified in the Salem witch trials! Wild.

𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 is a serious infectious disease found worldwide, that has up to a 100% lethality rate in susceptible species.

BSE is a disease of 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, which are small proteins found primarily in nervous tissue. The exact function of these little proteins is unknown, however they can have big effects when they are 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐝 (change in shape).

𝐃𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 is a genetic condition where the animal looks heavily muscled, despite having normal exercise, diet, and other lifestyle factors.
