𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 (FMD) is a viral disease of significant economic importance in food production species. Outbreaks of this disease can have disastrous consequences for agriculture, such as the 2001 outbreak in the United Kingdom that was estimated to cost £𝟖 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 and resulted in the destruction of more than 𝟔 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 sheep and cattle.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 is exactly what the name suggests, toxicity from ingesting too much lead. There are several potential causes of this condition across species, but today we are going to talk about birds!

𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐚 means big (macro-) mouth (stoma). Usually, this condition presents as the corners of the lips extending far into the cheek, giving the animal an appearance like the Joker.

𝐓𝐨𝐱𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐚 is a protozoan parasite that we most commonly associate with infectious abortion, however it can also cause 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 (whole body) disease with serious consequences!

𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 is an infection with 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚, a fungus that is normally found in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract of animals. Under certain circumstances, this fungus can proliferate, causing the disease!

𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 (PPE) is a pretty descriptive name! It affects pigs, causes proliferation of cells, and it is an 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, a disease affecting the intestines.

𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐧 are plants of the Pteridium species, which are common in various places around the world. Bracken fern has several 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜 (cancer-causing) toxins, which can cause issues for animals eating large amounts of the plant.

𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 are more scientifically known as 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬, and can be found all over the dog! We most commonly see them in the mouth, but they can even be found in places like the eye and skin.
