𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞 is a viral infection, caused by 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬. The virus gets its name because it can cause 𝐜𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 (blue tinge to the tissue) of the tongue! Weird.

𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐲 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 is a viral disease that causes lumps on the skin (I know, shocking). This disease is most commonly seen in Africa.

𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚 is a viral disease caused by a 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬. This disease is highly transmissible with no known treatment, and infected horses will carry the virus for the rest of their lives. Therefore, prevention of this disease is critical!

𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 are, of course, not real. However, there is a viral disease called 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬 that can make rabbits look an awful lot like they have antlers! It is believed that this disease is the origin of the jackalope myth.

Outbreaks of this disease can have disastrous consequences for agriculture, such as the 2001 outbreak in the United Kingdom that was estimated to cost £𝟖 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 and resulted in the destruction of more than 𝟔 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 sheep and cattle.

𝐏𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 is a viral infection that mimics typical rabies, hence the name! However, this virus is actually a 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬, instead of a 𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐝𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬 like rabies.

𝐉𝐚𝐚𝐠𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐤𝐭𝐞 is a virus that causes 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐚, or tumours of the lining cells of the lungs. This disease is most commonly seen in Africa, Asia and Europe. Jaagsiekte is the Afrikaans name for this disease, meaning “sheep sickness”.
