𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 are modified hairs with thick layers of 𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧, the same fibrous protein that makes up scales, fingernails, hooves and claws. Porcupines use these quills to deter predators from attacking them.

𝐋𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐚 is a big crazy word, but if you break it down it makes sense! Lymph- refers to the lymphatic system, angie- refers to vessels, and -ectasia refers to dilation. So putting it all together, lymphangiectasia is dilation of of the lymphatic vessels! Simple. We typically see this disease in the intestine, but it can occur in other areas.

𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 is a cystic enlargement of the kidney due to dilation of the 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 structures, where urine is aggregated prior to making its journey to the bladder. This leads to a kidney that looks a bit like a water balloon!

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐳𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐬 are a specific type of gastrointestinal foreign body, caused by animals ingesting large amounts of hair. This hair clumps together in the moist environment of the gastrointestinal tract, and forms what we think of as a hairball!
