Special Stain: Warthin-Starry

Today’s special stain is π–πšπ«ππ‘π’π§-π’ππšπ«π«π² 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐒𝐧!

π–π‘πšπ 𝐒𝐬 𝐚 π–πšπ«ππ‘π’π§-π’ππšπ«π«π² 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐒𝐧?
The Warthin-Starry stain highlights certain types of π†π«πšπ¦-𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐒𝐯𝐞 bacteria (see last week’s post on Gram stains!) that don’t absorb Gram stain. These bacteria include 𝐬𝐩𝐒𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐑𝐚𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 (spiral-shaped bacteria) and some small π›πšπœπ’π₯π₯𝐒 (rod-shaped bacteria). The stain dyes these bacteria black, so they stand out against the golden yellow background!

This image is a case of 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐒𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐒𝐜 𝐄. 𝐜𝐨π₯𝐒 in a pig! This strain of E. coli gathers along the surface of the intestinal 𝐯𝐒π₯π₯𝐒 (long finger-like projections) and causes diarrhea, without actually damaging the cells.
