Phaeohyphomycosis

Although these fungi most commonly infect the skin, they can also affect other organs.

We most commonly see this in cats, however any species can get it!

Black yeasts are found in soil, on wood or in vegetation. Most animals become infected when the fungus contaminates a wound or is introduced into the skin via a thorn, sliver, or stick puncture.

Once introduced into the skin, the yeasts activate a strong immune response. The immune system has a tough time digesting these fungi, so tons of inflammatory cells accumulate in the area, forming a nodule. Occasionally, the fungi are able to access the bloodstream and spread to other organs. One of the most common sites of infection is the brain!

The fungal ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ก๐š๐ž (branching form) are easily identified under the microscope. In some cases, fungal culture is needed to confirm the fungal species.

Unfortunately, treatment is very challenging for this particular infection. Antifungals can be used, however they are not super effective. Most of the time the affected skin must be surgically removed. Cases affecting the brain have an extremely poor prognosis.
