Infectious Sinusitis

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Todayโ€™s path rounds are on ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ!

๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ is an infection with the bacteria ๐Œ๐ฒ๐œ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š ๐ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฆ. As the name suggests, this bacteria primarily infects the sinuses of turkeys!

๐–๐ก๐จ ๐ ๐ž๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ?
We see this primarily in turkeys, but many types of birds can be infected.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ?
Turkeys acquire Mycoplasma through inhalation or interacting with contaminated feed, water, or bedding. The bacteria initially colonizes the ๐ž๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ (lining surface) of the respiratory tract. From there, the bacteria proliferates, causing an infection.

Mycoplasma infection causes turkeys to have difficulty breathing. They may also cough or sneeze, and often have nasal discharge. The most common clinical sign in turkeys is swelling of the infraorbital sinus, or the sinus immediately below the eye. Thankfully, this infection typically does not kill the turkey.

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ข๐š๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐?
Diagnosis is usually based on the typical sinus swelling, but to confirm there are tests that detect the bacteria itself. The most common samples to detect the bacteria are swabs of the sinus, trachea, or ๐œ๐ก๐จ๐š๐ง๐š, the oral opening into the respiratory tract.

Mycoplasma is a very tough bacteria. Although it responds to antibiotics in terms of reducing clinical signs, the birds are still infected for the rest of their life, and can shed bacteria into the environment to infect other birds. Therefore, most birds with the disease are culled. Prevention typically involves purchasing new birds from Mycoplasma-free flocks, to reduce the risk of introducing the bacteria onto your farm in the first place.
