FIP is a viral infection of cats that is characterized by ๐ฏ๐š๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ (leaky vessels) and inflammation. It has two forms, ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž/๐ฐ๐ž๐ญ, where excess fluid accumulates in the body cavities, and ๐ง๐จ๐ง-๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž/๐๐ซ๐ฒ, where the inflammation forms distinct nodules.

๐”๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ is the presence of ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข (stones, basically) in the urinary passages, typically in the bladder or urethra. You can also get calculi in the kidney, called ๐ง๐ž๐ฉ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ, as part of the same disease process. The stones are made up of precipitated urine contents, proteins and debris, which clump together and can obstruct normal flow of urine.

๐„๐Œ๐’ is an endocrine dysfunction of ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง, the bodyโ€™s main hormone it uses to get ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž (the main sugar used for energy) into cells. In normal horses, insulin levels increase when blood glucose levels increase, to help store the glucose away in cells and provide the cells energy. In EMS horses, they typically have ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐š, which is when there are high levels of insulin despite normal levels of blood glucose.

๐๐๐ˆ๐ƒ is an endocrine dysfunction caused by an ๐š๐๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐š (a benign tumour) in the pituitary gland of the horse. The pituitary glandโ€™s main job is to produce hormones that control the other hormone-secreting organs, such as the adrenal glands or thyroid gland. So when it develops an adenoma, the tumour can interfere with the normal hormone production of the pituitary gland, causing issues like PPID.

Hemangiosarcoma is a tumour of ๐ž๐ง๐๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ, which are the cells that line blood vessels. They are most commonly originate in the spleen, skin, heart and liver, but can send metastases anywhere in the body. They are very highly aggressive, and often by the time they are diagnosed, there are already metastases somewhere in the body.

๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง is when one piece of the intestine (called the ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฆ) telescopes into another piece of intestine (called the ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ข๐ฉ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ฌ), forming a multi-layered intestinal segment.

EPM is a nervous disease of horses that is caused by protozoan parasites, most commonly ๐’๐š๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐œ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐ž๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐š. Affected horses have ๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฑ๐ข๐š (irregular gait due to nervous disease), weakness and depression. Horses also often have head tilt, facial nerve paralysis with drooping of the ears and lips, and difficulty swallowing. These clinical signs tend to get worse over time, progressing to seizures, recumbency and death.

A ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐›๐ฎ๐ฌ is basically a giant blood clot that completely blocks blood flow through a vessel. An ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฌ is a more broad term, covering everything from smaller thrombi, bacteria, parasites or foreign material. Put them together, and you get ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐›๐จ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ, which is a blockage of a vessel from either a thrombus or an embolus. Today, we are talking about what happens when a thrombus forms within the pulmonary veins or arteries specifically.

๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง is when the blood supply to a tissue is blocked, causing that tissue to die. Infarcts in the kidney are somewhat unique because of their characteristic shape: each vessel in the kidney supplies a wedge shaped section of tissue, so when an infarct occurs, only that wedge of kidney is affected. So when you look at the kidney ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ฒ (without a microscope) you are able to see distinctive wedge shapes of infarcted tissue!

Gastric ulcers are areas where the stomach ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐š (the lining) has become eroded, exposing the underlying tissue. This often associated with hemorrhage and inflammation.
