𝐂𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐲𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 is a fungal infection of the skin of amphibians. Unfortunately, this disease has caused population declines in many wild amphibian species. Sometimes, it can even occur as outbreaks leading to a massive mortality event.

𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐬 are the most commonly diagnosed tumour of horses! They occur in the skin, and generally are pretty harmless. There are 6 recognized types, ranging from a hairless patch of skin to large, aggressive masses.

𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 is a type of 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 (skin condition caused by mites) caused by the mites of the 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐱 family. These mites specifically live in hair follicles, so they have a long and slender shape compared to other mite species.

𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 are a benign tumour that are derived from skin 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬, which are cells that pick up weird foreign proteins and show them to the immune system for identification. In the skin, these cells are specifically called 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬.

𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 is a type of 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 (skin condition caused by mites) caused by the mite 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐢. You might know this mite as the causative agent of 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 in humans! Gross.

𝐂𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚 is a particular form of 𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚 (tumour affecting the lymphocytes, a component of the immune system) that affects the skin. Typically, the animal presents with large masses or nodules throughout the affected area.

𝐄𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐦 is a disease caused by ingesting fungus-infested grain, and is the oldest known 𝐦𝐲𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 (toxicity produced by fungi). In fact, ergot toxicity may have been the underlying “cause” of the witches identified in the Salem witch trials! Wild.

𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 is a serious infectious disease found worldwide, that has up to a 100% lethality rate in susceptible species.

𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 is a type of transmissible cancer that has been devastating Tasmanian devil populations in Australia. At one point, over 80% of the Tasmanian devil population was lost due to this disease, making scientists very concerned the species would go extinct. The tumour primarily affects the face, causing large masses and interfering with the devil’s ability to eat. The devils often end up starving to death because they simply can’t cope with the large masses.

Swine erysipelas is a bacterial disease of pigs that is very, very common! Up to 50% of pig farms are considered to be colonized with the bacteria.
