𝐎𝐫𝐟 is viral disease that can be found throughout the world! It also goes by the names 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐡𝐲𝐦𝐚 or 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬.

𝐀𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 is a common type of clover found throughout North America, that is associated with liver disease in horses. Alsike clover’s scientific name is 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐦.

𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 is 𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 (inflammation of the skin) caused by 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚, which are small worm-like parasites. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 are the most common parasites we see causing this condition!

𝐕𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐀 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 can be quite common in turtles kept in captivity if they aren’t fed a proper diet. This is just one reason why consulting with your exotics veterinarian about your pet is so important!

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐡 is a form of 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞, which is the initial tissue that fills in a wound during healing. With proud flesh, the granulation tissue is considered 𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, with too much tissue being formed.

𝐑𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 are also known as 𝐂𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚, but they are anything but cute! These larval stages of the Cuterebra fly cause 𝐦𝐲𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 (fly infestation) in several species.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞 is a potential outcome of exposure to severe cold. However, it is actually fairly uncommon in our animal species, thanks to their long hair!

𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 are more scientifically known as 𝐃𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐬, and are a species of tick that spend their time hanging out on 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐬 (deer species).

𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 are modified hairs with thick layers of 𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧, the same fibrous protein that makes up scales, fingernails, hooves and claws. Porcupines use these quills to deter predators from attacking them.

𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐩𝐢𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 is a bacterial infection of the skin, causing an 𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 (fluid leaking from tissue) that makes the pigs look and feel greasy.
