𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 are more scientifically known as 𝐇𝐚𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐬. They are referred to as “barber pole” because the female worms are predominantly red, with some of the internal organs showing as bright white striping on the surface. Cool!

𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 are the most important condition affecting the 𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬 of the eye, which orients light entering the eye onto the retina. Normal lenses are perfectly clear, but in cataracts they end up becoming cloudy!

𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 are collections of 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥 that form large, tumour-like nodules. We most commonly see these in the brain!

𝐏𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 is a viral infection that mimics typical rabies, hence the name! However, this virus is actually a 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬, instead of a 𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐝𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬 like rabies.

𝐆𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐦𝐚 literally means “cotton tumour”, which is pretty accurate to what they are! Gossypibomas are when a piece of 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐚𝐮𝐳𝐞 is inadvertently left in the animal during surgery.

𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐢 are also known as accessory spleens, and they are a form of 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚, or normal tissue in an abnormal place. In other words, they are basically mini spleens in an area where the spleen normally isn’t!

𝐓𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 is more properly known as 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐲𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬. In this condition, exercise causes rapid degeneration of the muscle fibers, which can be extremely painful!

𝐋𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚 is a tumour of the 𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐬, one of the body’s major white blood cells. Because the white blood cells are found in the blood, these tumours can occur pretty much anywhere, and are always considered 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 (aggressive).

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐧 is an 𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞, which are common feed additives found in ruminant diets that helps promote growth. However, these compounds are 𝐝𝐨𝐬𝐞-𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 toxins, meaning that having too much is a bad thing!

𝐔𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 are tumours of the uterine lining. The risk of these tumours increases with the age of the animal, and they are particularly common in rabbits!
