๐‘๐ฎ๐›๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐ฃ๐š๐ฐ is one of many possible consequences of ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž, and results in jaw bones that are unusually soft and malleable, like rubber! This condition is more scientifically known as

๐‚๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ is essentially what it sounds like, having too much copper in the body. There are two basic forms, ๐š๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, where the body is delivered a large amount of copper over a short period of time, and ๐œ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, where there are consistently high levels of copper, but not enough to induce acute toxicity.

๐•๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ is the accumulation of ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐œ ๐š๐œ๐ข๐, a breakdown product of protein that is normally excreted by the kidneys. When there is an issue with the kidneys, uric acid is not properly excreted, leading to little white nodules of urate crystals all over the internal organs. Weird!

๐„๐Œ๐’ is an endocrine dysfunction of ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง, the bodyโ€™s main hormone it uses to get ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž (the main sugar used for energy) into cells. In normal horses, insulin levels increase when blood glucose levels increase, to help store the glucose away in cells and provide the cells energy. In EMS horses, they typically have ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐š, which is when there are high levels of insulin despite normal levels of blood glucose.

๐๐๐ˆ๐ƒ is an endocrine dysfunction caused by an ๐š๐๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐š (a benign tumour) in the pituitary gland of the horse. The pituitary glandโ€™s main job is to produce hormones that control the other hormone-secreting organs, such as the adrenal glands or thyroid gland. So when it develops an adenoma, the tumour can interfere with the normal hormone production of the pituitary gland, causing issues like PPID.

In diabetes mellitus, ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž (the major sugar in our body) is not able to move through its normal metabolic cycle, causing it to accumulate in the blood stream causing ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐œ๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐š (too much glucose in the blood).
