Winter Ticks

Happy Holidays! All of this weekโ€™s posts will be themed around the winter holiday season. Todayโ€™s path rounds are on ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ฌ!

๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ฌ are more scientifically known as ๐ƒ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐š๐ฅ๐›๐ข๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฌ, and are a species of tick that spend their time hanging out on ๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฌ (deer species).

Any cervid can become infested, however we most commonly see this condition in moose.

Dermacentor larvae will climb onto a moose in the summer, where they slowly develop into adult ticks by winter. The female ticks will take a blood meal from the moose, mate, then fall off the moose to lay their eggs. And thus, the cycle continues. These tick infestations can be extremely severe, with one moose having a record ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ– ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ticks found on its body!

Having your skin absolutely infested with ticks is not a pleasant experienceโ€ฆ so these poor moose try to itch, rub and bite these ticks to get them off. Because the adults are present in the winter, this can lead to severe damage to the animalโ€™s winter coat. Not only does this reduce that animalโ€™s ability to withstand a harsh winter, they can also spend so much time itching that they donโ€™t eat enough food, leading to starvation. In some cases, having so many adult ticks feeding at once can also cause ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐š (reduced red blood cells), which can cause death in severe cases.

This infestation is pretty easy to diagnose, even from far away! Affected moose will have areas of ๐š๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐š (hair loss) over their withers, back and tail.

For captive cervids, typical ๐š๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐๐ž (anti-tick) medications work on these little friends. However, wild cervids donโ€™t often go to the vet clinic! Unfortunately, these cervids will usually have to deal with the infestation without treatment.
