๐–๐ก๐จ ๐ ๐ž๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ?
We can see this in an ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐š๐ง (turtle or tortoise), however we most commonly see it in young ๐„๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง ๐›๐จ๐ฑ ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ?
As mentioned, Vitamin A deficiency typically results from an improper diet. Some turtles, like the Eastern box turtle, are primarily carnivorous when they are young. Carnivores tend to acquire Vitamin A from organ meats like the liver in their diet, so if these tissues are not adequately provided, the animal may become deficient. In particular, turtles exclusively fed foods like dried shrimp mix or muscle meats may experience this condition.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐š ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐›๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ?
Vitamin A has an important role in maintaining ๐ž๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐š, which are the cells that line structures of the body and form glands. When Vitamin A is deficient, epithelia tend to convert to ๐ฌ๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ž๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ, which is a flattened, non-productive type of epithelium similar to the skin. This is called ๐ฌ๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ž๐ญ๐š๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐š, which means that one type of cell is replaced with squamous tissue.

When glandular tissue undergoes squamous metaplasia, it stops producing its normal secretion. In turtles, we most commonly see this change in the ๐‡๐š๐ซ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐ ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐๐ฌ, which produce a tear film to protect the eye, and in the ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐ž๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ, which produces mucus in the ear to facilitate hearing. Without adequate tear production, the turtles get severe irritation of the eyelids, leading to ๐ž๐๐ž๐ฆ๐š (swelling). The mucus produced in the middle ear helps trap bacteria to prevent infection, so Vitamin A deficient animals are predisposed to ๐š๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐›๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ (infection of the ear).

Both eyelid edema and aural abscesses are easy to diagnose just by looking at the turtle! These swellings will alert the veterinarian to a dietary problem that can be investigated further by reviewing the animalโ€™s ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฌ๐›๐š๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฒ (how the animal is cared for).

Vitamin A deficiency is treated by diet changes, usually by increasing the amount of dark leafy greens like spinach. In more carnivorous species, ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฒ like small fish can be provided, to ensure that the turtle is getting Vitamin A-rich organ meats. In some cases, turtles may also be supplemented with dry cat food.
