Meningiomas

Todayโ€™s path rounds are on ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ! This post is inspired by one of my cases this week!

๐Œ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ are tumours of the ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌ, which are the fibrous layers covering the brain. Although these tumours are technically benign, they compress the brain causing pretty significant damage!

Any species can get this!

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ?
Like most tumours, the exact reason for development is unknown. They are actually the most common type of ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ข๐š๐ฅ (within the braincase of the skull) tumour.

As mentioned, these tumours compress the brain and can compromise its function. Depending on what portion of the brain is affected, the tumour can cause seizures, blindness, irregular gait, lethargy and behavioural changes.

These tumours can be diagnosed through specialized imaging, such as CT scans or MRI. At necropsy, they are easily identified when the brain is removed, as the mass is often adhered to the skull. Examining the brain itself will show a distorted shape where the mass was located.

1-3) Meningiomas pushing on the brain!
4-5) Some brains showing an irregular shape from meningioma compression.
6) Some meningiomas have a characteristic appearance under the microscope of whorling cells. These are called ๐ฉ๐ฌ๐š๐ฆ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ๐š ๐›๐จ๐๐ข๐ž๐ฌ. Pretty!
