๐‰๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐ฌ are, of course, not real. However, there is a viral disease called ๐’๐ก๐จ๐ฉ๐ž ๐ฉ๐š๐ฉ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ that can make rabbits look an awful lot like they have antlers! It is believed that this disease is the origin of the jackalope myth.

We see this disease in rabbits, particularly wild species.

This virus is believed to be spread by contact between rabbits, although the exact ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ (mechanism of disease) is not clear. The virus may also be spread through biting insects like ticks or mosquitoes.

Shope papillomavirus is related to other papillomaviruses, which are known for causing wart-like masses. With this particular virus, the โ€œwartsโ€ are actually large masses of ๐ค๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง, the material that makes up fingernails and hair. These masses continue to grow and produce more and more keratin, resulting in a solid horn-like growth. Usually these masses occur on the face, resulting in the legend of the horned rabbit!

Diagnosis is typically based on observing the animal, as not many things cause these horn-like growths! The presence of the virus can be confirmed through detecting the virusโ€™ DNA directly.

Thankfully, the immune system will eventually recognize the virus and remove the tumours, meaning that treatment is not usually needed in most cases. In the mean time, the horns typically do not bother the rabbit, unless they interfere with eating and drinking. In some cases, surgical removal of the horns may be needed to maintain quality of life.
