Histiocytomas

Todayโ€™s path rounds are on ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐œ๐ฒ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ! This was a request ๐Ÿ˜„

๐‡๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐œ๐ฒ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ are a benign tumour that are derived from skin ๐๐ž๐ง๐๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐œ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ, which are cells that pick up weird foreign proteins and show them to the immune system for identification. In the skin, these cells are specifically called

Technically this tumour can occur in any species, however we most commonly think of it in dogs. Specifically, this tumour often occurs in young dogs, and Boxers and Dachshunds appear to be predisposed.

These tumours look like a raised, red nodule on the skin, that kind of look like a button. They are most commonly found on the head and ears. These nodules often have no hair over them, and can grow quite rapidly, seemingly overnight! Interestingly, these tumours often ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ž๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ, meaning they just go away after a while.

Because these tumours spontaneously regress, they often donโ€™t cause any issues for the animal. However, sometimes the tumour can be itchy or bothersome, and they will lick at them incessantly. In these cases, the mass might become ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ and bleed.

The best method of diagnosis is a ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ฉ๐ฌ๐ฒ (removal of the tumour) for submission to a pathologist, however in the vet clinic they can be diagnosed by ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐๐ฅ๐ž ๐š๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž, where a sample of cells is taken using a needle and then examined under the microscope. On an aspirate, you can oval shaped cells with a large amount of ๐œ๐ฒ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฆ (cell contents), that kind of look like fried eggs. Neat!

Typically these are โ€œtreatedโ€ with ๐›๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐ง๐ž๐ ๐ฅ๐ž๐œ๐ญ, otherwise known as doing nothing and watching it for changes. If the tumour spontaneously regresses, great! If not, they can be surgically removed if they are bothering the dog or the owner.
