Cyclopia

Todayโ€™s path rounds are on ๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐š!

๐‚๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐š is the presence of a single, large eye, like a cyclops from Greek mythology. This is a problem that develops during development of the fetus, and is often associated with other ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ฅ (present at birth) abnormalities.

Any species can get this! Today though, weโ€™re going to talk about a specific presentation of cyclopia seen in sheep.

Cyclopia in sheep can be caused by ingestion of the plant ๐•๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฆ, otherwise known as the corn lily. This plant contains a ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐œ (mutation causing) agent called ๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ž, which can cause issues in the growing lamb when the mother ingests the plant. Cyclopamine is thought to interfere with normal patterning of the developing fetusโ€™ brain and head, causing the abnormality. Interestingly, cyclopia only develops when pregnant ewes ingest the plant on day 14 of their pregnancy! Weird.

Having one large eye wouldnโ€™t be a huge problem on its own, however this malformation is often associated with malformations in the brain as well. These animals often are ๐ง๐จ๐ง-๐ฏ๐ข๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž and cannot live beyond a few hours.

Cyclopia can occur sporadically without any identifiable cause, so there is no method of preventing it completely. However, keeping pastures clear of corn lily plants is a big help in sheep!
