𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 is a developmental condition where the 𝐚𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚, the major vessel leaving the heart to deliver blood to the body, develops from the wrong site in the embryo.

𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐬 are the most commonly diagnosed tumour of horses! They occur in the skin, and generally are pretty harmless. There are 6 recognized types, ranging from a hairless patch of skin to large, aggressive masses.

𝐇𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 is an infection of the liver with 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚, which are small single celled protozoans. Typically, these protozoa cause intestinal disease, making hepatic coccidiosis a somewhat unique presentation for this parasite’s life cycle.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬 is a roundworm whose larvae like to live in muscle tissue, while the adults live in the small intestine. They have been known to cause outbreaks of disease in humans, because they are 𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 (infect both humans and animals)!

𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 is a type of 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 (skin condition caused by mites) caused by the mites of the 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐱 family. These mites specifically live in hair follicles, so they have a long and slender shape compared to other mite species.

𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 is a parasitic disease caused by a 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐳𝐨𝐚𝐧, which are small single celled organisms. Interestingly, this protozoan is transmitted alongside another parasite, the roundworm 𝐇𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐦. So these poor animals end up with two parasitic infections for the price of one!

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 are small viruses that tend to infect the nucleus of cells they infect. There are many different types of parvoviruses, so today we will specifically talk about canine parvovirus, which is a common cause of diarrhea in dogs.

𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐲 is an increase in the number of digits on one limb or multiple limbs. This can range from one extra digit, most often seen in cloven hooved animals, to multiple extra toes, often seen in cats.

𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 are a benign tumour that are derived from skin 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬, which are cells that pick up weird foreign proteins and show them to the immune system for identification. In the skin, these cells are specifically called 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬.
