𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 are, of course, not real. However, there is a viral disease called 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬 that can make rabbits look an awful lot like they have antlers! It is believed that this disease is the origin of the jackalope myth.

𝐄𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐫 is a thickening and irritation of the external ear caused by an ear mite, 𝐏𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐢. This irritation produces a crust lining the ear that is extremely painful!

𝐔𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 are tumours of the uterine lining. The risk of these tumours increases with the age of the animal, and they are particularly common in rabbits!

𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 is a viral infection of rabbits, as the name would suggest. This disease has been implicated in many massive mortality events in rabbits, with 90% of exposed rabbits dying from the disease.

𝐇𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 is an infection of the liver with 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚, which are small single celled protozoans. Typically, these protozoa cause intestinal disease, making hepatic coccidiosis a somewhat unique presentation for this parasite’s life cycle.
