Toxpath Case 2: The Bali Incident

It is mid-summer and you are taking a working vacation volunteering at a diagnostic laboratory in Bali (lucky you). A 4 year old Labrador comes in for necropsy.

Fifth dog to die in this animal shelter in the last week. Showed signs of vomiting, anorexia, depression, and hematochezia prior to death. All of the dogs are routinely vaccinated and dewormed for endoparasites and ectoparasites. Currently eating a commercial dog kibble. We tested for Leptospira, parvovirus, adenovirus, Ehrlichia, and Babesia, and all of the tests were negative. Wondering what is going on.

Necropsy Findings
Examined a 4 year old Labrador Retriever. On external examination, the dog is severely icteric affecting the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera. There is approximately 1 L of yellow-orange, translucent, watery fluid in the abdomen. The liver is enlarged and firm with locally extensive areas of fibrosis. There is petechiation over the gastrointestinal tract, bladder, pancreas, kidneys, and heart. The intestines contain dark red, tarry fecal material.
