Case 16: Maggie

Maggie is brought into your emergency practice one Tuesday evening. Her owner tells you she has been extremely lethargic, not eating, vomiting and drinking a LOT of water. Maggie is new to the owner, who adopted her from a well-known breeder’s retirement program.

Maggie is QAR on presentation. Her respiratory rate is 20bpm with no abnormal sounds. Her heart rate is 130bpm with no abnormal sounds. Her abdomen has a slightly distended appearance, and palpation reveals a large, soft mass within the caudal abdomen. Her temperature is 38ºC (100.4ºF).
