Case 11: Stella

You are on call at your mixed animal practice when a client calls you about her mare Stella. Stella is 4 months pregnant, and yesterday she seemed a bit lethargic. The owner didn’t think much of it, but today Stella has severe diarrhea!

Physical Exam
Stella is QAR on presentation. Her digital pulses on her front limbs are easily palpable. Her heart rate is 40bpm, with no irregular sounds. Her respiratory rate is 20bpm, with no abnormal sounds. Her temperature is 39.5ºC (103.1ºF). Her intestinal borborygmi are decreased in all four quadrants, and her ileocecal valve flush occurs once every 2 minutes. She kicks at her belly several times during your examination, and appears uncomfortable.
