Case 1: Tex

A 1 month old foal named Tex presents to your clinic due to diarrhea and a swollen joint. The owner is very concerned about Tex, because she has other foals on the property that are developing a fever.

Physical Exam
Tex is QAR on presentation. He has mild, cream coloured nasal discharge from both nostrils. His mucous membranes are pink and tacky. Auscultation of the thorax reveals some mild crackling noises and a respiratory rate of 60 breaths/minute. Cardiac auscultation is normal with a rate of 100 beats/minute. Gastrointestinal sounds are slightly increased in all four quadrants. His rectal temperature is 40ºC (104ºF), and there is ample liquid feces in the rectum. You note that both stifles and the left hock appear mildly swollen, and the right hock is markedly swollen.
